2D in 3D Scene - Castle in the Forest
A downloadable project
I'm no artist or developer but learned some basics in Godot and wanted to try out creating a dramatic scene using 2D PNG files with removed backgrounds.
Most of the images are generated by DALLE 3. I did removing the backgrounds myself by hand. In many of the images it's done rather uncleanly but due to the fact that they are so far from the camera, it doesn't really matter.
I drew the clouds myself in Corel Painter Essentials. There's several layers of them and they move at different speeds to create some kind of parallax effect.
For more liveliness in the scene I also added:
- castle window lights switching on and off randomly
- lightning effects over the clouds
- slowly moving "sun"
- rain using particle effects
It's a bit much for the scene but I wanted to try different things.
Lessons learned:
- one line of forest trees is enough to make up a whole forest
- when creating images using AI all the objects have different lighting on them which can be a bit of an issue
- mountains could have used more variation, maybe also more layers
Things I wanna explore for a better version of this:
- particle effects are still somewhat of a mystery to me as they have a ton of different settings - I wanna be able to use them for more realistic rain and smoke effects in the future
- a lot of the visuals can be improved getting the world environment and sun settings right so I need to look into that
- using more lights in different ways will add atmosphere - I was think of small ascending green lights in the forest and some fireflies in the front that have somewhat of a random behaviour
Background music is by myself. Check out other game soundtracks in my profile.

Neat! This would be a really cool way to do a Point and Click game
that looks cool
